"In any rational world this is the future of architecture" - Dennis Hayes, Earth Day Founder

Earth Day is extra special this year because 2020 marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day! USGBC-LA invites the green building community to join us on an exclusive and exciting virtual tour of the City of Santa Monica's City Services Building (CSB). The CSB is arguably the greenest municipal building in the world and it is the first completed living building in Southern California.

The City of Santa Monica is a model for 21st-century government leadership. The CSB is targeting full Living Building Certification which means that over the next 12-18 months the building must meet the world’s most rigorous performance-based criteria for sustainability. This project hits many firsts for the region and for industry best practices - resiliency, design, ROI, operations, public wellbeing, healthy materials, smart building automation technologies, carbon neutrality, and water self-sufficiency.

The tour will walk attendees through the recently completed project. The building fulfills a vision to bring core municipal operations into one City Hall Campus and create a centralized hub for public counter services. As a living building, the CSB will produce the energy and water it consumes on-site, and it will never have water or electric bills. The project is 50k SF in total and models regenerative and passive design along with Santa Monica’s commitment to fiscal and environmental sustainability. The worst-in-class materials, typically prevalent in the building industry today, are eliminated from the project (also known as Red List Free).

Attendees are encouraged to ask questions. Following the tour, let’s have a virtual happy hour to celebrate Earth Day!
