USGBC-LA is pleased to partner with Verdical Group and the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) to present a virtual tour of Los Angeles Valley College's LEED v3 BD+C Gold-certified Community Service Center and Glen Gateway buildings.
Hear from the project leads at LA Valley College, the design team, and the LEED consultant as they provide a virtual walkthrough of these two unique buildings, highlighting specific sustainability challenges and successful savings measures along the way.
In addition to mandating that all new campus buildings implement energy efficiency and other sustainable features, LA Valley College's Sustainability Standards go above and beyond by requiring that all new buildings and major renovations over 7,500 square feet must achieve LEED certification. While the requirement specifies a minimum level of Certified, the Gold-certified Community Service Center and Glen Gateway building demonstrate an exceptional commitment to sustainable design.
The 28,839-square-foot College Community Services Center contains a gymnasium and various other recreational areas for students and children in the community. The project used a combination of efficiency and energy-saving strategies to achieve energy cost savings of 34%. Over 15% of total energy costs were offset through onsite-generated renewables. The project diverted 87% of onsite-generated construction waste from landfills, and 18% of the building materials used were manufactured using recycled materials.
The 70,437-square-foot Glen Gateway Building houses the LA Valley College campus’ conference center, as well as several administrative offices, workforce development programs, and classrooms. It boasts a 43% water use reduction, including landscaping and irrigation systems that have reduced the total water used for irrigation by 51% The building also achieved an energy cost savings of nearly 35% with 9.04% of the total annual energy cost of the project being offset by renewable, onsite-generated energy.
